Bata Kenya participated at a conference dubbed 140 Characters Conference (#140conf) on the 6th of February 2010. The conference whose agenda was to 'discuss Emerging real-time internet trends (case study on Twitter) and their effect on business' was held at a restaurant in Nairobi.
The half day event consisted of presentations, group discussions and networking and a question and answer session with the panelists consisting of Twitter users from various fields : Aly-Khan Satchu (@alykhansatchu) - CEO, www.rich.co.ke; Eston Whitefield (@estoni) - Bush Pilot; Larry Madowo (@larrymadowo) - Journalist/News Anchor, KTN Kenya; Robert Kunga (@mwirigi) - Auditor; RSM Ashvir and Salim Amin - Journalist/Entrepreneur; Chairman; A24 Media. Bata Kenya(@batakenya) was recognized as one of the local companies making use of Twitter for business alongside Kenya Airways and Toyota Kenya. "It was a great opportunity to meet with other Twitter users in Kenya and share ideas", says Christine Mwiti (@mrsmwiti) who represented Bata Kenya at the conference.
Twitter is a free social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. A tweet consists of up to 140 characters. Since its creation in 2006,Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as "SMS of the Internet". Unlike its cousin Facebook, Twitter is more of an information network than a social network.In Kenya there are an estimated 80,000 Twitter users.
