The Stanchart Nairobi Marathon is the largest athletic event held in Kenya, annually. The Marathon brings together runners from all over the country as well as foreign participants to Kenya's Capital City - Nairobi where it takes place. With over 10,000 participants, this year's marathon took place on 25th October 2009.

This year, for the first time ,Edward Mburu Wanjiru, decided he would participate in the Stanchart marathon. It was this decision that made him embark on daily practice sessions that he started in February this year.In the evening after work Edward, who works in the Bata Kenya Distribution Center would take time to run a mock marathon in preparation of the challenge that was ahead of him.
His hard work paid when he won a bronze medal in recognition for being in the top 100 . Edward finished the 21KM race in the 54th position. Suprisingly, this was his first time for the 25 year old to participate in a race since high school.
Bata Kenya MD congratulated him on his achievement, urging him to keep it up.

Edward's achievement has earned him some kind of celebrity status among his peers. And by the way, is he related to Samuel Wanjiru the half marathon world record holder? No he isn't, he says, but like his namesake, he is certainly headed for even greater things.
We congratulate him heartly and wish him all the best in future.
